What Happens If You Don’t Use All Your NDIS Funding?

One of the most common questions participants ask is:
“What happens if I don’t use all of my NDIS funding before my plan ends?”

The good news is — unused funding doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong.
In fact, it’s quite common for participants to have some funding left over at the end of their plan.

Here’s what you need to know.

Can You Carry Unused NDIS Funding Over?

In most cases, unused NDIS funding does not roll over into your next plan.

Once your current plan ends, any remaining funding generally expires and is replaced by the funding in your new plan.

However, within the same plan, unspent funds at the end of a funding period can roll over into the next funding period. This means any unused funding may be added to the next funding period — but only while the current plan is still active.

That’s why it’s important to understand your budget and make sure you’re using the supports available to help you work towards your goals.

Why Do Participants Sometimes Have Funding Left Over?

There are many reasons why funding may not be fully used, including:

  • Difficulty finding providers

  • Supports being cancelled or delayed

  • Not fully understanding the plan

  • Changes in circumstances or goals

  • Wanting to save funding “just in case”

Sometimes participants simply don’t realise what supports they can access through their funding.

Will Unused Funding Affect Future NDIS Plans?

Potentially, yes.

The NDIS may look at how your funding was used when reviewing future plans. If large amounts of funding consistently go unused, they may question whether the same level of funding is required in the future.

That’s why it’s important to:

  • Use supports that align with your goals

  • Keep records and reports where needed

  • Communicate if there are barriers preventing you from using supports

How to Make the Most of Your NDIS Funding

Some helpful ways to stay on track include:

Understand Your Budget

Know how much funding you have available and what each category can be used for.

Plan Ahead

Booking supports early can help avoid missing out on services later in your plan.

Check Your Spending Regularly

Keeping track of your budget can help you avoid both overspending and underspending.

Ask Questions

If you’re unsure whether something can be funded, ask your Plan Manager or Support Coordinator.
