NDIS Plan Approved? Here’s What to Do Next
Getting your NDIS plan approved is an exciting milestone — but it can also feel a little overwhelming.
Once your plan is in place, many participants and families find themselves asking… “What happens now?”
The good news is, you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you get started and make the most of your NDIS plan.
1. Take Time to Understand Your Plan
Before jumping in, it’s important to understand what’s included in your plan.
Your NDIS plan will outline:
Your goals
The funding you’ve been approved for
The different support categories (Core, Capacity Building, and Capital)
Take some time to read through your plan and make note of anything you’re unsure about — this will help you feel more confident moving forward.
2. Decide How You Want to Manage Your Funding
One of the most important decisions you’ll make is how your funding is managed.
You generally have three options:
NDIA-Managed – the NDIS pays providers directly
Self-Managed – you manage your own budget and payments
Plan-Managed – a plan manager helps you handle invoices and track your budget – like Pacific Plan Management.
Many participants choose plan management because it gives you flexibility and removes the stress of managing finances yourself.
3. Choose the Right Providers
Next, you’ll want to find providers who can support you in working towards your goals.
This might include:
Support workers
Therapists
Community or social programs
Take your time to find providers who are the right fit for you. It’s okay to ask questions, compare options, and even try a few before deciding. You can seek help from a Local Area Coordinator (LAC), early childhood partner, or support coordinator to assist in finding providers too.
4. Set Up Service Agreements
Once you’ve chosen your providers, you may be asked to sign a service agreement.
This document outlines:
What supports will be delivered
The cost of services
How and when services will be provided
Make sure you understand the agreement before signing — and don’t be afraid to ask for changes if needed.
5. Start Using Your Funding
Now comes the exciting part — putting your plan into action!
Begin booking supports and services that align with your goals.
It’s a good idea to keep track of your spending so your funding lasts for the duration of your plan.
6. Keep Track of Your Budget
Managing your budget is key to getting the most out of your plan.
This includes:
Monitoring how much you’re spending
Making sure invoices are correct
Planning ahead so you don’t run out of funding early
This is where many participants find having a plan manager especially helpful — taking care of invoices, tracking budgets, and providing regular statements so you always know where your funding is at.
