NDIS Fund Management Options

The latest NDIS Quarterly Performance Report highlighted an interesting trend in how participants choose to manage their funding. According to the report:

  • 6% of participants have their funding NDIA-managed

  • 26% choose to Self-Manage their plan

  • 68% work with a Plan Manager

Each option offers different levels of control, flexibility, and support. Understanding how they work can help you decide which approach best suits your needs.

Let’s take a closer look at the three different NDIS fund management options.

Self-Managed

When you choose to self-manage your NDIS funding, you take full control of how your plan is managed. This means you are responsible for the financial administration and record-keeping associated with your NDIS plan.

As a self-manager, you will:

  • Pay and submit invoices through the NDIS portal

  • Keep records of receipts and transactions

  • Arrange and organise your own supports

  • Monitor your budget to ensure funds last for the duration of your plan

Many participants like self-management because it offers maximum flexibility. You can choose to work with both registered and unregistered providers, which can open up more options when selecting services that suit your needs.

However, it also requires strong organisational skills and the time to manage the administrative side of your funding.

NDIA Managed

With NDIA-managed (or agency-managed) funding, the National Disability Insurance Agency handles the financial administration of your plan.

In this arrangement, the NDIA:

  • Pays your providers directly

  • Manages financial records

  • Processes claims through the NDIS system

This option can make managing your funding simpler because the NDIA takes care of the paperwork and payments.

However, there is one key limitation: you can only use NDIS-registered providers. While this provides reassurance that providers meet NDIS standards, it may limit your choice of services compared to other management options.

Plan Managed

Plan management offers a balance between support and flexibility.

When you choose a Plan Manager, a dedicated service (like us at Pacific Plan Management) helps you manage the financial side of your NDIS plan while still allowing you to stay in control of your supports.

A Plan Manager works on your behalf to handle the administration involved in managing your funding. This includes:

  • Receiving and paying invoices from your chosen providers

  • Claiming funds from your NDIS budget

  • Ensuring claims follow the NDIS Price Guide and remain compliant

  • Providing regular statements and reports so you can track your spending

One of the biggest advantages of plan management is that it combines the flexibility of self-management with the support of professional financial administration.

With plan management you can:

  • Use both registered and unregistered providers

  • Avoid the day-to-day admin and paperwork

  • Receive easy-to-understand financial reports

  • Get guidance from experts who understand the NDIS

Plan management funding is also separate to your support budget, which means it does not reduce the funding available for your supports.

Choosing the Right Option for You

Every NDIS participant is different, and the right fund management option will depend on how much control, flexibility, and support you would like when managing your plan.

Some people prefer the independence of self-management, while others value the simplicity of NDIA management. Many participants choose plan management because it provides greater flexibility without the administrative workload.

In fact, the latest data shows that 68% of NDIS participants choose to have their funding plan managed.
