NDIS Plan Management Explained: A Simple Guide for Participants

Starting out with the NDIS (or even navigating it after a few years) can feel overwhelming — especially when it comes to managing your funding and paying providers. That’s where understanding your plan management options can make a huge difference.

In this guide, we’ll break down what NDIS Plan Management is, the different ways you can manage your plan, and how a Plan Manager can help make your NDIS journey simpler and less stressful.

What Are the Options for Managing Your NDIS Funding?

When you receive an NDIS plan, you can choose how your funding is managed.

There are three main options:

1. Plan Managed

This is where a Plan Manager (like us!) looks after the financial and administrative side of your plan.

A Plan Manager helps by:

  • Paying your providers on your behalf

  • Tracking your budgets and spending

  • Sending you regular statements

  • Helping you understand how much funding you have left

  • Checking invoices against the NDIS Price Guide

  • Reducing stress and paperwork

One of the biggest benefits of being plan managed is flexibility — you can use both registered and unregistered providers, giving you more choice and control.

At Pacific Plan Management, we focus on fast payments, clear communication, and making your NDIS experience as easy and transparent as possible.

Plan management is ideal if:
👉 You want support with budgeting, paying invoices, and staying on top of your funding without the stress.

2. Self-Managed

With self-management, you (or your nominee) receive the funding directly from the NDIA and are responsible for:

  • Paying providers

  • Keeping records and receipts

  • Tracking your budget

  • Making sure supports meet NDIS rules

You can use both registered and unregistered providers, but you take on all the financial responsibility yourself.

3. Agency Managed (NDIA Managed)

If your plan is agency managed, the NDIA pays your providers directly.

The main limitation is that you can only use registered NDIS providers, which may reduce your choice.

Why Choose a Plan Manager?

Plan management offers the best of both worlds — flexibility without the admin burden.

A Plan Manager gives you:

  • Peace of mind knowing invoices are handled correctly

  • Clear visibility over your budget

  • More time to focus on your supports and goals

  • Help understanding how your funding is being used

Who Is Eligible for Plan Management?

The great news is: anyone with an NDIS plan can choose plan management.

It also doesn’t cost you anything.
Plan management funding is included as a separate line item in your plan, so it does not reduce your support budget.

How Do I Get Plan Management Added to My NDIS Plan?

It’s simple. At your planning meeting or plan review, just tell your NDIA planner or Local Area Coordinator that you’d like to be plan managed.

They will then include funding for plan management in your plan, and you can choose your preferred provider.
