Understanding the Latest Changes to NDIS Funded Supports
As of October 2, 2025, the 12-month transition period for the updated NDIS support lists has officially come to an end.
Since October 2024, the NDIA has been helping participants and their nominees better understand what can and can’t be purchased with NDIS funding.
The updated guidelines now clearly separate supports into two categories:
Supports that are NDIS-funded – can be purchased using NDIS funds.
Supports that are not NDIS-funded – cannot be purchased using NDIS funds.
To make the transition smoother, the NDIA gave participants time to adjust. During the transition year, the NDIA did not raise debts for a participant’s first or second purchase of an item under $1,500 that turned out not to be a NDIS-funded support.
However, from October 3, 2025, if NDIS funds are used to buy something that isn’t considered a NDIS support, a debt may be raised — regardless of the cost.
Updated NDIS Support Lists Now Available
The NDIS has released an updated version of its supports funded by the NDIS list, outlining which items and services can be purchased with NDIS funds. There’s also a corresponding list of items that cannot be purchased.
In some cases, participants may be able to request a substitution from the replacement support list if a similar support would better meet their needs.
What Supports Can Be Funded Under the NDIS?
The NDIS may fund a support if it meets ALL of the following criteria:
It relates directly to your disability and meets the eligibility requirements.
It helps you work towards your personal goals and aspirations.
It improves your ability to participate in social or economic activities.
It represents value for money, meaning:
The cost is reasonable compared to other options that provide the same outcome.
It may help reduce the need for other funded supports over time.
It is proven to be effective and beneficial for you.
It complements and supports your informal supports, such as family or friends.
Is it reasonable and necessary?
It is included in the NDIS list of approved supports.
What Supports Cannot Be Funded?
Under NDIS legislation, there are certain goods and services that cannot be funded. These include items or services that:
Are illegal or unlawful.
Replace income or wages.
Are likely to cause harm to you or pose a risk to others.
Relate to everyday living costs such as rent, groceries, or utility bills.
Supports that are not evidence based.
Duplicate funding already provided through other government services or supports.
Cover entertainment costs, event tickets, or holiday expenses.
